about

I wrote this song after reading an article in the New York Times about the early life of recently captured Colton Harris-Moore aka The Barefoot Bandit, who is infamous for stealing a variety of shiny objects including planes after teaching himself to fly using a flight simulator. Although his later exploits are well-documented, I found much more interesting this story of a kid (known as Island Boy at that point) who had nothing and nowhere to go - on antipsychotics, literally a dozen calls to Child Protective Services by the time he was fifteen but teased at school too so mostly skipped. Of course he was a habitual runaway, and why wouldn't he run? It's his only way out and anywhere's got to be better than here, so why not run?

lyrics

Another beautiful morning
Cicadas chirping at the dawn
Island Boy's on the run again
Dirty feet cross a neighbour's lawn

Fast as he can, he's going
Anywhere but here
Anywhere but here
He's nothing to lose, so why not run?

Big white house at the end of the road
Open window, big fridge full
Island Boy can't help his hunger
He's in trouble again

Fast as he can, he's going
Anywhere but here
Anywhere but here
He's nothing to lose, so why not run?

Shrink tells him to take some pills
But his home's still full of drink and mess
Island Boy never had a chance
Despite a dozen calls to CPS

Fast as he can, he's going
Anywhere but here
Anywhere but here
He's nothing to lose, so why not run?

Another beautiful morning
Cicadas chirping at the dawn
Island Boy on the run again
Dirty feet on the run again

Fast as he can, he's going
Anywhere but here
Anywhere but here
He's nothing to lose, so why not
Anywhere but here
Anywhere but here
He's nothing to lose, so why not run?
